Gluten Free Vitamins and Supplements
Gluten free has become a common household word in the past five years. But more recently, it has become more of a phenomenon. Mintel, had predicted a 15 to 25 percent annual growth over the next five years for gluten free foods, but with the recession, forecast experts still are predicting 10 to 11 percent growth in 2009 and 2010.
While only about 1 percent of the American population has Celiac Disease (CD), gluten free has become a trend popularized by celebrities and people who are not gluten-sensitive but want to follow a gluten free diet because they believe it is a more healthy way to live. Proponents believe that a gluten free diet will aid weight loss and help with digestive ailments. Although there is no scientific support for the benefits of a gluten free diet gluten free products are chic, to say the least!
Celiac Disease and a Growing Gluten-Sensitive Population
Celiac Disease, as we all know is an auto-immune disease with a genetic disposition. As the population grows, the number of people who acquire CD will logically grow as well. Those who suffer from CD cannot tolerate gluten. In such patients, gluten, a type of protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, triggers an allergic reaction within the small intestine. As a result, the small intestine loses its ability to absorb nutrients leading to nutritional deficiencies and many other health complications. Most CD sufferers are deficient in the B vitamins, Vitamins K and D, minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, essential fatty acids and fiber.
In addition to CD, there are people who are just gluten-sensitive. Those who suffer from Type 1 diabetes, ADD, ADHD or autism also prefer a gluten free diet. This estimated to be about 30 percent of Americans.
