Resveratrol Shows Metabolic Benefits For Obese Individuals
According to the Nutrition Business Journal, consumer sales of Resveratrol dietary supplements alone were $31 million in 2009, an increase of $1 million from the previous year. The increased attention from scientific research continues to draw consumers to the diverse health benefits of Resveratrol.
If that news doesn't make you want to start your own resveratrol supplement line, maybe the following will. In addition to being a great antioxidant that supports heart health and may offer anti-aging benefits, recent research suggests that Resveratrol benefits may extend to improving the metabolic profile of those who are obese.
The study, led by Jen Olholm at the Department of Endocrinology at Aarhus University Hospital, was the first in vitro study to examine the effects of Resveratrol on levels of adipocytokines in human adipose tissue explants. When human fat cells were exposed to certain adipocytokines, researchers noted increased secretion of pro-inflammatory compounds. When cells were simultaneously exposed to Resveratrol, there was a 16 to 36 percent reduction in the expression of cytokines (proteins that mediate and control immune and inflammatory responses).
The results of their study showed that Resveratrol changed the production of adipokines (compounds from human fat cells) and produced an anti-inflammatory effect. Resveratrol also increased adiponectin expression changes which may be beneficial to obese individuals with metabolic syndrome as their adipose tissue expresses lower adiponectin levels and higher levels of proinflammatory adipokines. 1
This study may be of benefit to developing new therapies for obesity-associated ailments. The team of scientists sought to investigate whether Resveratrol's anti-inflammatory benefits could extend to the low-grade inflammatory state associated with obesity. The abnormal production of adipocytokines is believed to have direct implications in the development of metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders believed to increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Those who have metabolic syndrome are often overweight or obese. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey it affects 25 percent of the American population. 2 For weight loss, Resveratrol supplements may provide a key component to weight management and for supporting a healthy metabolic profile.
What Exactly Are The Benefits of Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a powerful phenolic and anti-fungal compound and has already been associated with a host of health benefits. In 1992, Dr Serge Renaud coined the phrase "French Paradox" to describe a strange phenomenon related to the dietary pattern and health of those living in southern France. Despite a relatively high-fat diet, Dr. Renaud noticed that those living in the southern provinces of France had a low incidence of heart disease and obesity. He attributed this to the regular consumption of red wine which contains Resveratrol.
In 2003, a team of Harvard researchers, headed by Dr. David Sinclair, showed Resveratrol increased the life span of yeast and other simpler life forms. Pursuing further investigation, Dr. Sinclair discovered that Resveratrol may activate a class of proteins known as sirtuins, the same proteins that are activated when people undergo a calorie restricted diet (CRD). By mimicking the effects of a calorie restricted diet, Resveratrol may be able to produce a metabolic profile that offsets the debilitating effects of aging.
Below are some of the health benefits that are believed to be associated with Resveratrol supplementation:
- Anti-cancerous effects, although the mechanisms are not yet fully understood. 3
- Energy endurance enhancement 4
- Protection against aged-related memory loss 5
Now That I know The Benefits of Resveratrol Supplements, How Do I Start My Own Product Line?
Natural food sources of Resveratrol include grapes, wine, grape juice, peanuts and berries. But large quantities of these natural foods need to be consumed in order to achieve the potential benefits of Resveratrol. Resveratrol supplements offer the ideal dietary source to consumers. Popular delivery forms of Resveratrol supplements include tablets, capsules and powders.
